HISTORY
Nuclear Management Company, LLC (NMC) currently operates two nuclear
power plants, Prairie Island and Monticello, in Minnesota for
owner-utility Xcel Energy.
Four Upper Midwest utilities formed NMC in February 1999 to operate five
nuclear plants in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. A fifth utility joined
NMC in 2000 which added a sixth plant, located in Michigan, to the
company.
The founding utilities were Alliant Energy Nuclear, a subsidiary of
Alliant Energy Corp., based in Madison, Wis.; NSP Nuclear Generation, a
subsidiary of Xcel Energy Inc., Minneapolis (then called Northern States
Power Co.); WEC Nuclear Corporation, a subsidiary of Wisconsin Energy
Corp., Milwaukee, Wis.; Wisconsin Electric Power Co. (now known as We
Energies), a unit of Wisconsin Energy Corp., Two Rivers, Wis.
Consumers Energy of Jackson, Mich., a subsidiary of CMS Energy, joined
NMC in 2000.
Beginning in July 2005, the individual utilities one by one left NMC,
selling their nuclear assets to other larger operators. Today, Xcel
Energy is the sole utility with its Prairie Island and Monticello
plants.
