Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant
The Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant located
in Monticello, Minnesota, is owned by Xcel Energy Inc. It is a one-unit, boiling water
reactor, rated at 600 megawatt capacity. The Monticello plant began commercial operation
in June 1971. The Monticello plant is in excellent material condition and has a sustained
history of world-class upper quartile performance for nuclear plants operated for more
than 20 years.

In 1996, Monticello was rated among the best performing U.S. nuclear plants
in three of five benchmarking studies released by the NEI. In 1997, it received an INPO
rating of "excellent" the plants fifth consecutive excellence award
over a nine-year period and its sixth excellence award overall. In 2000,
both unit availability and capacity factor were 84 percent. It has received the General Electric
(GE) Outstanding Plant Performance Award for boiling water reactors annually for the past
10 years and for 17 of the past 22 years. It has received the Minnesota Safety Council
Award for the past 15 years for outstanding efforts in reducing workplace injuries and
illnesses.
